Black and bold Melbourne home design
A union of tradition and modern styling gives character to this welcoming home in Middle Park Melbourne.
In addition to transforming the 4 existing apartments into a single modern styled home, retaining the heritage facade was a challenge for architects Chamberlain Javens. The constraints resulted in a linking of the existing façade design and the spacious informal entertainment areas. Another facet to the flow of spaces is the black zinc box which houses the bedrooms while providing a cantilevered ground floor for the outdoor terrace and a backdrop to the steel stairs at the front of the house.
A continuity of interest is created by the flow of natural materials and lighting as key elements of the design. The play of lighting, shadows and texture creates an intimate family home while achieving a warm and welcoming space for guests. The architectural firm is passionate about materiality and features this in the project with the use of primarily of spotted gum cladding, black zinc cladding and travertine stone flooring. The dark and light hues of the travertine combine wonderfully with the natural light flooding through the property. The end result is a striking, dramatic and functional home for family and guests to indulge.
