A dynamic and unconventional design for the ‘Tramway’ house
The unusual site of this home known as the ‘Tramway” drew a dynamic architectural response from Vibe Design. Given the owners involvement in motorsport, the design strategy was to create a sense of movement and also to respond in a unique way to the unusual shape of the site. The exterior is certainly striking, with a zinc-clad box floating over the private entry. Horizontal timbers battens balance the façade, and screen the living spaces from passers by. The architecture of the lower storey has a lightweight feel, and allows all the bedrooms upstairs to view the garden and swimming pool. The interiors are defined by a stunning messmate timber feature wall, which wraps around to include the entry to the study and master bedroom. The wall provides a great contrast for the furnishings and the cool wall and floor palette. Thermal mass from the concrete slab, high performing windows and northern orientation are sustainable features of the home, enabling minimal mechanical cooling and heating.
