Have you ever stopped mid-scrub and wondered what’s actually in your cleaning products? You’re not alone. More and more people are making the switch to eco friendly cleaning products as awareness about harmful chemicals, plastic pollution and caring for our oceans grows, so does the desire to make better choices at home.
When you think about how often you clean and how many products you use, it makes sense that more of us are rethinking what we’re spraying around our kitchens, bathrooms, and laundry rooms. Many conventional cleaners contain harsh chemicals that aren’t just bad for the environment—they can also irritate your skin, affect air quality, and even trigger allergies. Choosing eco-friendly options is a simple way to align your cleaning habits with your values, without sacrificing results.
One of the biggest advantages of switching to green cleaning products is peace of mind. You don’t have to worry about what you’re breathing in or rinsing down the drain. Most eco brands use plant-based ingredients, biodegradable formulas, and minimal or refillable packaging, which means less plastic waste and fewer toxins in our waterways.
I can personally vouch that these products are not just more eco friendly than traditional cleaning products, but *actually clean* (hallelujah!). Whether it’s a laundry liquid that tackles stains naturally or a multi-purpose spray that leaves your surfaces spotless without the chemical smell, you’re making your home safer and more sustainable with every swap.
Here are 5 products I’ve personally tested and my rating:

Hudstone Home
I use Hudstone Home powders in my dishwasher plus soaking and washing clothes and find their products to be excellent. I particularly love how they don’t transport water and everything is designed to be used with water already in your home (ie in the dishwasher and washing machine). Their products are highly concentrated, biodegradable, greywater safe, and free from phosphates, fillers, and synthetic fragrances, making them suitable for sensitive skin and anyone who cares about the environment but still wants results.
Customer reviews frequently praise Hudstone for its powerful cleaning ability, especially in removing tough stains with minimal product use, and appreciate the cost-effectiveness over time. The brand’s minimalist packaging and refill system also support its low-waste ethos. They recently moved from supplying their powders in paper packaging to calico drawstring bags, which are compostable, recyclable, reusable and made using 100% recycled cotton. They get my highest rating if you’re looking for eco friendly cleaning products.
My rating 10/10

Koh
Koh offers a simple, non-toxic cleaning fluid that is certified by GECA (Good Environmental Choice Australia), and effective across multiple surfaces. It eliminates the need for multiple products, reducing chemical usage and packaging waste. Koh has received widespread acclaim for its convenience and efficacy, particularly when used with the brand’s reusable microfiber cloths and mop systems. Reviews highlight its streak-free finish on glass and tiles and note a noticeable absence of strong chemical smells.
I’ve been using Koh since they launched and wouldn’t be without it. As claimed, I’ve found it to be fantastic on any surface including stainless steel, stone benchtops, glass, timber furniture and floors. It has been applied liberally around my house and smells great, however new player For All (see below) have pipped Koh because they don’t ship water like Koh does, so I’ve taken 2 points off for that (although cleaning ability and smell are a definite 10/10)
Rating 8/10

Ecostore
I use ecostore dishwashing detergent and body wash. Their plant and mineral based products both smell great and work well, plus they are cruelty-free, vegan, and packaged in sugarcane-derived recyclable bottles (although bulk sizes unfortunately come in High-Density Polyethylene).
I haven’t used their laundry liquids or household cleaners however customer reviews mention being happy with Ecostore’s gentle yet effective cleaning, pleasant aroma, and ethical transparency, though some users note it may require a bit more scrubbing power on heavy grime. Ecostore products are certified by Environmental Choice NZ validating their eco credentials.
Rating 9/10

The Dirt Company
Dirt Company produces refillable laundry detergents with a focus on sustainability, using biodegradable ingredients and offering a closed-loop packaging system. Their formulas include both enzyme-powered and sensitive options, balancing environmental responsibility with strong cleaning performance. Reviews are overwhelmingly positive, with users citing excellent stain removal and fresh, non-irritating scents.
The brand’s reusable glass dispenser bottles and refill pouches reinforce its commitment to reducing plastic waste and emissions. I used Dirt company liquid laundry detergent, wool & delicates detergent and stain remover for about two years before replacing it with Hudstone Home powder products. As mentioned above, I found the transport of liquid to be inferior to Hudstone’s concept of high concentrate powders to be preferable and their washing ability was also superior.
Rating 7/10

For All
For All is a relatively new but fast-growing player in the eco-cleaning space, offering multi-purpose, refillable cleaning concentrates with non-toxic, biodegradable ingredients. Similar to Koh, it is designed to be diluted at home (gotta love!) and therefore reduces shipping weight and single-use plastic.
I’ve tested it as a Koh alternative and found it to be great for cleaning surfaces and smells fresh without being overpowering. Due to the concentrated product that I can mix up myself without buying and transporting water, For All has joined Hudstone Home at the top of my personal shopping list for eco friendly cleaning products
Rating 10/10
