Located just outside lively Long Island area of New York, this beautifully crafted home stands out with its long, low cedar-clad lines—secured by a series of innovative stainless steel clips that are as functional as they are striking. Designed by Bates Masi Architects, the house is more than just a visual statement—it’s a carefully engineered sanctuary, created to block out the constant buzz of the nearby village.
Acoustic performance was a top priority in the design, influencing everything from the form and materials to the smallest details. At its core—literally—is a nearly 20-inch thick wall assembly made from poured concrete, continuous from the foundation right up to the roof. This concrete core is wrapped in insulating foam, which also doubled as formwork during construction. The result? Incredible thermal performance, near-silent interiors, and structural walls strong enough to span the open-plan living space and covered deck without the need for extra supports.
Adding to the home’s durability and clever design are the custom stainless steel clips used to secure the cedar cladding. Unlike traditional fasteners that often cause timber to split or loosen over time, these spring-like clips allow the wood to breathe—expanding and contracting naturally with the weather. The result is a low-maintenance, long-lasting exterior that’s both beautiful and built to withstand the elements.
