The renovation and extension of this light-filled passive solar home in Sydney was designed by Fox Johnston architects. Featuring lots of timber elements and a fantastic polished aggregate concrete floor, the design focused on offering flexibility for the young family of 5 and its evolving lifestyle needs. Multi-tasked spaces were included to allow re-purposing for the changing needs of the family. The playroom for instance can be converted into a study or an additional bedroom when no longer needed and the guest retreat can be a future teenager’s bedroom or a place to stay for visiting grandparents. The garden areas are a lovely backdrop and also provide a great space for young children to play.
Energy efficiency was an important objective so the design focused on passive solar orientation, natural light and ventilation. The central courtyard adjoining the old and new areas allows light and breezes to permeate the home and the living areas to extend into the lush green garden. Rich, natural textures enhance minimalist lines and forms of the structure while providing the cozy and warm atmosphere of a family home.
