Modern industrial barn architecture in Aspen Creek

It seems like the architect-client relationship on this project in Park City, UT was a match made in heaven, both parties collaborating on the style and design of the home from the outset. On the owners wish-list was:

• Relatively narrow forms with a largely East-West main axis.
• Simple building forms.
• Really simple roofs with deep eaves.
• Lots of glass to the South.
• Natural, low-maintenance materials.
• Open floor plans.

The architects from Carney Logan Burke agreed wholeheartedly with the above elements and added in the following ideas, which the owner loved:

• Thin roof edges (a thin brim to the hat).
• Use of honest, western materials.
• Two or more connected basic forms.
• Open stairs adjacent to a vertical window wall.
• Windows extending to floor level.
• Bump outs with portal windows to define sub-areas within large open spaces.

The exterior finished on the home included black/graphite aluminum windows, gray barnboard, and oxidized steel, producing a rustic, industrial modern barn style of appearance. The interior details are a little more refined, still in keeping with the industrial vibe, including polished concrete for all 3 floor levels, hemlock timber slatted ceilings (with contrasting black cloth underneath) and timber detailing throughout, including the kitchen, a bench that runs virtually the whole length of the house, and a recycled barn mosaic feature wall.
