Pod style architecture on Stradbroke Island

This striking home on Stradbroke Island was designed by Shaun Lockyer Architects as a getaway from the city for its owners, who wanted a deliberate diversion in style from a domestic everyday home. Located 200m from the water, the home consists of a series of interconnected pods around an east facing courtyard, each with a distinct function and character. The form of the house is deliberately eclectic with playful materials and colours. There was an attempt to create a sense of a number of different experiences in the one house.

The living areas and first-floor main bedroom take up the largest pavilion, linked by internal stairs to the children’s annex and, via an external courtyard, to the separate guest quarters. This arrangement allows the owners, who have three sons, the flexibility of opening out some or all of the spaces as required.
