Sustainable architecture award for Rozelle terrace house

This award-winning terrace house in Rozelle, Sydney has been transformed from a house that had little connection to the outdoors and was cold and dark, into the open, light-filled abode you see today. Anderson Architecture created the dramatic overhaul, which was all about connecting the new living spaces with the back garden, with bifold doors opening the family room up for a great flow from indoors to out. The home also won a BPN Sustainability Award for its many sustainable features:

• • Concrete floors made from recycled aggregate, fly ash and cement replacement compounds to save 1 tonne of CO2 per cubic metre compared with standard concrete;

• • FSC Eco certified timber veneer used in the kitchen joinery; Sustainably managed hardwood used throughout much of the home;

• • Rotex hydronic floor heating system with gas booster;

• • Solar collectors on the roof transfer heated water to the concrete slab;

• • Low VOC timber finishes
