Herbst Architects were keen to introduce a range of spatial, light and textural experiences into the design of this home on Great Barrier Island in New Zealand. A central covered deck forms the key living space and is flanked by a sun trapped court and the kitchen and dining space, enclosed on two sides with the third side fitted with sliding shutters to screen the wind. An outdoor fireplace creates ambiance and warmth, acting as the heart of the bach. A desire to blur inside and outside, a reference to camping, is achieved by a series of sliding doors and by making the passage, usually and interior space, partly external. The kitchen cabinets are amazing and I love the blurring from inside to out with the use of vertical timber battening throughout. What do you think?
