A modern take on an old Victorian architectural style…

Ever seen a home extension that looks like an alien has landed from space?

I’m always delighted when I see a home extension that is cohesive and seamless. Even though the original house might be a century old and the new part needs to fulfill 21st century living ideals, a clever and imaginative architect can look beyond the obvious and develop a symmetry between the old and the new.

This is the second project that we’ve featured designed by Angelo Candalepas of Candalepas Associates. Originally an old boarding house, the brief was to enlarge the original building and create a modern home. Angelo looked to the grand old Victorian homes nearby for inspiration and found it in their wide front verandas and their living spaces that face onto the street. He emulated the scale of the other homes and their roofing materials, and designed the front with ‘a kind of internalised veranda’ for the living spaces. He has achieved a clever and imaginative integration with the surrounding homes and a considered transition from the old building to the new.
