Oak elements for Johannesburg apartment design
The transformation of this apartment in the suburbs of Johannesburg started with a focus on the beautiful views of the hillside wilds and the city itself. Gass Architecture were briefed to enhance the apartment with the views in mind and create more open, liveable spaces. Oak was a key ingredient to the new interior design, starting with the kitchen cabinetry and following through to the bathrooms, living room and bedrooms. An open plan living area was incorporated into the design giving the main area a feeling of spaciousness, defined by a low flueless fireplace to delineate the dining area from the living space. Existing columns and beams that could not be altered could have been restrictive but were ingeniously concealed inside walls or transformed into features. I love the feeling of warmth and comfort this apartment exudes, achieved through lots of timber and natural materials. The black tile splashback in the kitchen looks amazing against the oak cabinetry. And a big surprise comes in the form of a zebra-themed wallpaper feature in the smallest room in the house!
